As one of the largest and most important parts of your home’s structure, your roof needs regular attention and maintenance. With the glaring summer sunlight, harsh spring and fall winds, and winter’s bitter cold and heavy snow, your roof endures Mother’s Nature’s fury (even more so than the average Midwesterner). While roofing systems are designed to withstand the elements for years on end, ultimately the material can only hold for so long. That’s why regular maintenance and inspections are especially important to maintaining the health of your roof.
IMPORTANCE OF ROUTINE ROOF INSPECTIONS
While a great deal of attention is paid to the well-being of a home’s structure, the interior or even the landscaping, how often do you ever check your roof for signs of damage? Honestly, probably not enough. Having your roof routinely checked may seem obnoxious or time-consuming, but when you check your roof for excessive weathering, you can actually prevent bigger issues down the line.
HOW TO INSPECT YOUR ROOF
Don’t be intimidated—regularly inspecting your roof is surprisingly simple.
First, take a look at the outside of your roof. Look for missing exterior pieces, like shingles or tiles. Check around anything that stems from your roof, like chimneys, exhaust pipes or skylights. You’ll want to watch out for pooling water or signs that water is compromising the sealing.
CHECK ATTIC FOR SIGNS OF WATER DAMAGE
After you check the exterior of your home, move into your attic. Start searching for signs of moisture on the insulation or water on the structure itself (it will look like streaks or dried watermarks).
When performing these check-ups, always be careful. Your safety is far more important than your roof. If you’re feeling uncomfortable, we’re always happy to pop over and take a look around the interior and exterior of your home—checking the life span of your roof, all exterior protrusions and any signs of interior water damage.
